This article discusses legal methods that may help overcome confl icts between international trade and environmental treaties. Traditionally, the principle of systemic integration has been a tool for conceptualising international law as a whole, as well as a viable means for avoiding conflicts between treaties. However, systemic integration is only applicable at the international adjudicative level. This leaves a gap in existing literature between the need to avoid treaty conflicts and the rather limited role that systemic integration can play. Based on a close analysis of relevant sources, this article unravels a number of principles that underpin systemic integration, including the principles of mutual supportiveness, good faith, cooperation, and harmonisation. It freshly argues that these underlying principles have the potential to help avoid treaty confl icts and are capable of driving reconciliation at not only the international adjudicative level, but also the international institutional and domestic levels. Therefore, international trade and environmental treaty confl ict prevention mechanism should include both the principle of systemic integration and its underpinning principles, which could be deployed to effectively avoid conflicts in practice at the international adjudicative, international institutional and domestic levels.
